Welcome to this home-made website. I'm Mr Sketchum, a London-based caricature artist for hire at events. My 'ordinary' name is Alfie - but please, call me Mr Sketchum!

I've drawn on-the-spot lightning sketches at events for nineteen years - at over two thousand corporate functions, weddings and private parties. That's a lot of practice - I'm starting to get there...

Guests jump in and take part as subjects, as sardonic commentators, and as captivated witnesses to the likenesses that come together in nothing flat, and then are presented with unique party gifts which they all just played a huge part in creating - simply by being there and having a giggle.

"That's the best cara...cari..caraciktcha I've ever had! Out of all the caracikitchas I've ever ever had!"
A beaming Jamie Redknapp, Wentworth Golf Club

"Not bad! You should think about doing it for a living!!"

Johnny Ball (genial mathematical showman, television legend & all-round brilliant guy), Grosvenor House

I can never predict what events will be like - some can be quite surreal! Voilà Monsieur Sketchum (below) in his (my) French "ensemble", attending a wedding at the château of Dick Strawbridge MBE & Angel Adoree in France - which turned out to be a magical booking (click here for more).

A couple of months earlier, I was asked to dress as a "Belgian hipster artist" and be filmed for a TV ad sketching Paul Gascoigne (the one-and-only Gazza) on the top of an open-top double-decker bus, whilst being interviewed about World Cup football fixture results, all the while pretending to be Belgian! I find myself in some pretty unusual situations, but anyplace where guests are up for a little fun and I'm given the opportunity to foster a good atmosphere is good enough for me. Mix'n'mingling, working table-to-table over dinners and occasionally from one spot, all I need is my paper and pens, and a guest with a smile (I can work with fake :).

Chef of the Month ~ Nico Ladenis

Nico Ladenis
A one-time mentor of Gordon Ramsay, he once famously threw a plate of couscous and tripe at him.
He also "
..elevated the grain of rice into an art form".

As well as giving their verdicts on my cartoon portraits (I don't mind! *he says*), guests adore to rejoice when they've come out well, as well as ribbing one-another over who looks peculiar, which makes for spontaneous, cheeky yet super-friendly repartee that in a funny old way can really bring people together.

"Everyone loved your "works of art". We were really impressed with the jaw-dropping likenesses, long after you'd gone they were making the rounds to howls of laughter. Hilarious!"

Geoff & Lucy, Brighton

"Thanks for last night Alfie, Kim was touched to be given such a great memento of her ten years with the team at Hilton. Everyone had fun & thought it was a brilliant idea."

Alexandra Dumoulin, Hilton Group

(about a leaving gift done for her colleagues at their local bar (above))

Picking up on and highlighting the fleeting but unique characteristics of my subjects, I create likenesses that look more like you than you!!

I mainly draw ''singletons", but naturally couples & groups often ask to be immortalised together. As long as I can be sure to not get too tied up with one set of guests I'm happy to oblige - this can be amazing fun for some  close-knit "gangs" of guests.

For a one-off fee of £50 I can preprint your graphics and/or a message of your choice onto each sheet of paper I use ~ to mark the occasion, distinguish a brand, convey the ethos of a campaign, or simply to add a stylish personal touch. Let me know if this option might interest you & I'll explain further.

I draw on heavy A4 laser paper, and present every caricature inside a clear splash-proof top'n'side-opening document folder (okay, a plastic slleeve, or plastic bag, as Americans say - a good one though!)

"Give her a body like Baywatch ~ and a face like Crimewatch!!"

Anonymous (heartily bellowed at me from the other end of the room by a fellow at a Warburtons Bakery event)

With some people whatever I draw the real thing is always funnier! In actual fact it's gentlemen who supply me with raw comedy material, simply by being naturally amusing. In all sreiousness though, I aim to please, not to punish, and by nature I favour ladies, capturing likenesses that are fun but also often quite kind.

"What is it he does again??"

Mr Sketchum's mum

Here are the three types of event that I sketch at the most:

Weddings are my fave event to attend. My sketches are unique party favours that go down incredibly well amongst families. I usually mix'n'mingle during drinks, then wind my way around the wedding breakfast tables, and when things have loosened up I'm in high demand since I make guests crack up so much.

"Hi Alfie ~ Me and Al can't thank you enough! You are brilliant and your sketches are Hilare! Every single guest loved your work and thanks too for squeezing my two little pest sisters in at the end! Thanks again so much ~ Tanya and Alan :-)"

Big parties allow me to work the room by animating and bouncing off group after group. Smaller gatherings are a treat as they tend to be easygoing as I'm amongst family, friends and colleagues who'll get on famously anyway - so with me there they really flip their wigs - !

Breaking the ice with laughter, I supply novel talking points, personalised original artwork ( 'branded' if desired), and function as a marketing tool by helping you to create events which simultaneously entertain and generate awareness of your organisation.

"Just for a few seconds, would you mind not flaring your nostrils at me?"
Mr Sketchum

"How sweet! I put my face in your hands!"

Andrew Logan, jewellery sale, his place

I took my first booking to sketch at a madcap charidee "Bachelor and Spinster Ball" whilst still studying at Chelsea College of Art back in 1989, (so you could say I've been doing it 29 years). Thanks to the outré mêlée of carousing Débs and their potted "delights", sketching amid the chaos wasn't boring and soon, *ahem*, my magnetic personality rose to the fore.

Now with nineteen years' full-time experience as a professional "live" (on-the-spot/walkabout/close-up/not quite dead yet) entertainer and caricature artist 4 (for) hire, delightfully wicked sketches, and an incredibly pleasant, modest personality, I've achieved mastery at the fine Art of...getting out of the way of waiters.

"Find a job you love and you'll never have to work again."
